Ram 1500 Engine Options

The Ram 1500 is eligible for three engine options, each with varying levels of power output and towing capabilities. The standard equipment is the 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine. The V6 engine uses eTorque mild-hybrid technology to maximize performance and fuel efficiency. This provides drivers with a towing capacity of 7,510 pounds with 305 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. When properly equipped with Ram’s Trailer Tow Package, however, the towing capacity is increased to 7,730 pounds. Up next, the 3.0L EcoDieself V6 provides 9,660 pounds of towing capacity using 260 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. With the Trailer Tow Package, the EcoDiesel engine’s towing capacity is raised to 12,560 pounds. The next available engine is the 5.7L HEMI V8, which provides a towing capacity of up to 11,310 pounds of towing capacity by way of 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. The Trailer Tow Package allows for 11,610 pounds of towing ability. Lastly, the 5.7L HEMI V8 with eTorque maximizes towing capacity, using the same power output numbers to pull 11,320 pounds. With the Trailer Tow Package, the HEMI with eTorque leads the lineup with a towing capacity of 12,750 pounds.

What Towing Technologies Does Ram Offer?

Ram knows that, although important, engine power isn’t all it takes to make a vehicle great at towing. That’s why the Ram 1500 is available with a wide range of advanced towing technologies designed to make the job easier. The first technology is designed to help safely reverse the truck with a trailer. The trailer reverse steering control system uses a center stack-mounted knob that the driver turns to adjust the direction of the trailer while the truck takes over control of the steering wheel. When pulling a trailer, you want as much visibility as possible. That’s why the Ram 1500 is available with a 360-degree surround-view camera system that offers a birdseye view of the truck and trailer. Additionally, the Trailer Camera Prep package gives you the ability to attach up to two additional cameras to the in or on your trailer. Unlike many trucks, the Ram 1500’s available blindspot monitoring system comes with trailer coverage, which automatically accounts for the length of your trailer while sensing vehicles in your blind spots. Additionally, all Ram 1500 models come standard with an LED trailer hitch light, which makes it easy to link up a trailer in a dark environment. Lastly, rear air suspension is available for the Ram 1500, giving drivers the ability to lower the truck’s rear end to better align with a conventional trailer, fifth wheel, or gooseneck.

How is Towing Capacity Calculated?

Various factors go into determining how much weight a truck can pull. First, it’s important to understand that towing capacity and payload capacity are different. While towing capacity refers to how much weight a truck can tow in a trailer behind it, payload capacity is how much weight the truck can hold in its bed. The most important factor is the weight and capacity of your trailer and truck. The weight of the truck itself is called the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, better known as GVWR. This is the maximum weight the truck allows, including itself, all passengers, and the payload. Meanwhile, the Gross Trailer Weight Rating (GTWR) is the sum of the weight of your trailer plus the maximum weight of allowable cargo. The next factor is Tongue Weight, which is the amount of weight that a fully-loaded trailer puts on the truck’s trailer hitch. As one can assume, the Gross Combined Weight is the sum of a fully loaded truck and a fully loaded trailer.
